Steven Hill has researched and written 4 books on economic, social and political policies in Europe and the US.
His first book, Whose Vote Counts, appeared in 2001 (Beacon Press). It was written in collaboration with Rob Richie when they were with the Center of Voting and Democracy.
He continued to write on election reform and in 2003, his second book Fixing Elections: The Failure of America's Winner Take All Politics was published by Routledge Press.
Mark Satin, the controversial American political theorist, award winning author, publisher and editor of the Radical Middle Newsletter, wrote an in-depth review of Hill's book in the January 2006 issue of the newsletter. It's a good read!!
A second edition of that book is now available from Paradigm Publishers: 10 Steps to Repair American Democracy: A More Perfect Union - 2012 Election Edition. Hill identifies what he calls the nation's worst threat to democracy and recommends strategies for better national elections. Read an excerpt: Truthout.
During the first decade of 2000, Hill’s interests turned to Europe. He travelled widely to understand the uniquely European way of life.

He was impressed enough to suggest that fiscal crisis-ridden-California might be better off joining the European Union. Unbelievable!!!!
Anyway, it's all in Hill's latest and most successful book, Europe's Promise: Why the European Way is the Best Hope in an Insecure Age, published in January 2010 by the University of California Press.

Europe’s Promise: an Interview With Llewellyn King
TV interview: Llewellyn King, host of PBS' White House Chronicle (go to the 4:00 minute mark). A 25 minute interview well worth hearing. Steven Hill is an extraordinarily gifted writer... His book is a substantial piece of work, with enormous footnoting, about the future of Europe and its influence as a place of extreme livability. Hill's intriguing book suggests that Europe isn't the basket case that some people want to believe it is, and the quality of life and innovation there is quite high.
Europe’s Beacon Burns Less Brightly
Book review posted: 8 February 2010 - The Financial Times, by Tony Barber. Unlike intellectually lazier writers, he does not buy the argument that the 21st century belongs inevitably to China. He is surely right in saying that Europe’s prosperous, peaceful and democratic social market economy looks attractive when contrasted with the unbalanced, excessively deregulated US model or with China's politically repressive capitalism, Russia's petrodollar authoritarianism, Japan's corporate cronyism or conservative Islam.
FDL Book Salon Welcomes Steven Hill, Europe’s Promise
Book discussion: Posted 14 February 2010 - Book Salon discussion at Firedoglake about the euro and the Greek debt crisis, host R. Daniel Kelemen. In Europe’s Promise, Steven Hill explores European approaches to a range of contemporary policy challenges – from economic policy, to social policy, to health care, to climate change, to foreign policy – and shows that there is a distinctive ‘European Way’. He also argues convincingly that Americans have much to learn from it. More than 90 people contributed to the brisk, lively discussion.
Europe’s Promise, Why the European Way is the Best Hope in an Insecure Age
Book review: 2012 - Insight Turkey, vol. 13 no 4 by Teija Tiilikainen.
In this review, Ms Tiilikainen, Director of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, points out that: "Europe’s Promise is in many ways a provocative and exuberant book. Its narrative is consistent and well-structured and its presentation is clear." However, she goes on to say that " The European model also has its own weaknesses and there are areas where Europe could do well to learn from the US. A slightly more balanced approach to Europe’s exemplariness would have increased the credibility of the argument."
